I really love this space. I took a bookmaking class in late 2024 and again in early 2025. It was my first time making books in about 20 years. I was immediately taken with how knowledgeable and humble Gerald is, how thoughtful and intentional about creating an accessible and open space for people working in the book arts in detroit—it is a real pleasure to be a part of this. I so appreciate the elegance, craft, and instruction. I utilize open studio to continue working on projects and in late 2025 I joined a cohort of 6 other folks for bookbinding self-study. I just love the space and the people. I am so grateful and happy for the care and community to support and inspire my creativity! Do yourself a favor and sign up for a class today! The Center for the Book Arts Detroit is a phenomenal resource for those interested in working with letterpress or risograph printing, zine production or bookbinding. Excellent, reasonably priced classes are offered for very small groups of people. A complete beginner can learn to use the presses, or learn basic book binding skills. There are more advanced classes available, and year long interest groups that offer a sort of apprenticeship opportunity to really master the skills of a particular area at no cost. Open studio is available for continued creation and practice. Curious, talented, skilled artisans are there to guide your practice. This is just an amazing opportunity for anyone in the Detroit area who wants to learn any skill in the book arts!
I use Book Arts Detroit to make work and collaborate with others. The community that uses this space are artists, designers and makers. Everyone from teachers and peers are very respectful. It’s a conducive space for learning and making. I’ve attached a recent project learning how to handset and print calling cards for a friend
I took the riso basics class; it was so informative. Gerald is very knowledgeable! We learned how to use the machine, troubleshoot printing errors, cut paper, etc. We got to take home some awesome color chart prints and bookmark-sized art prints.
I came here for some of their bookbinding classes and I learned so much! Once the classes are over you can still ask questions and get additional help if you need it. As a beginner, they’ve really been a blessing.
I took a Riso printing class here and it was very fun, hands on, and informative! Everyone was super nice and it demystified so much about a process which I've always been curious about. Would 100% recommend it to anyone who is curious about the world of printing!
Book Arts Detroit changed my life forever. It could change yours too Before taking a class at Center for the Book Arts Detroit, I had never worked on anything book arts related or anything I'd even call creative. I wanted to try making something. I ended up taking several classes and was a part of the bookbinding cohort. I since got into a book arts MFA program, all thanks to BAD. My portfolio was entirely made of work made in this space, photographed in the space, and Gerald helped me with all of the writing bits. I made friends here too lifelong friends. Lots of caring and talented people hanging out learning together. BAD is so awesome. Also there's just tons of sick equipment and the space looks great. As quickly as you can, sign up for a class and check out the space and meet the people.
After months of watching for RISO workshops within a day’s driving distance, I found Smallworks around 2 hours away from my small Ohio farm town. G was very welcoming and knowledgeable with great resources/examples to start the group off well. Each attendee not only used multiple machines in the shop, but was hands on during the printing process-completing steps at least twice. All attendees collaborated on common problems for solutions before arriving at “the answer” and fixing it themselves. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to visit the studio more as my schedule allows.
