I've used ClioVis in a number of classes. It's a fantastic tool for students and teachers to build multi-dimensional timelines. Students learn a huge amount via these timelines and it really gets them thinking about connections and causation. Whether you're teaching an introductory class or an advanced seminar, ClioVis accelerates learning and drives student engagement.
I have used Cliovis in several classes, with both undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduates worked on group projects together and graduate students developed individual timelines. The courses focused on a range of social problems (e.g., child abuse, school shootings, drug overdoses) and students were asked to create a timeline documenting key legislation dates, major events, influential research, and prevention strategies associated with their topic. The primary goal of these assignments was to help students gain an understanding of the complexity of their topic and what influenced trends in their social problem over time. Students were asked to consider inequities related to their topic, as well. My favorite comment from an undergraduate after taking my course and in feedback about the Cliovis assignment was "I feel more mature after taking this class". Students will need a bit of hand-holding on the use of the platform but they caught on quickly and Cliovis technical support was fast and efficient. Definitely recommend this resource!
Although ClioVis has its quirks, as a multipurpose timeline, visualization, and presentation tool, not other tool currently on the market compares to its usefulness. And the ClioVis team is a joy to work with.
I have used ClioVis twice so far and plan to keep using it in my classes. It has helped me clarify and reflect about concepts such as time. It has also proven to be fantastic tool for student engagement and keeping their attention. I also like the decision making process involved in students timelines.
