Thank you for your work and sharing your experiences and knowledge gained by studying the craftsman who came before us. I recently watched your commentary on a Vermont house. The basic house is built to conform to dimentions of a New England Cape build in the 18th Century. That is when the roof sill seemed to set right of the front windows. Those houses had a large central chimney that served 3 fireplaces. The front hall was very small and accommodated winding stairways in front of that chimney. Natural light in that space was not a big issue. As we moved into tha 1800's a 2 to 3 feet of wall was extended above the first floor front windows in orderto provide for more head space on the second floor. Often two chimneys were built to accomodate Mr Franklin's stoves on both sides and to inable a larger front hall and a grander stairway. The older Capes generally were built with no dormers and when added the dormers were often shed dormers, but as you suggested always with 2 windows in each. However at this time those windows were single hung and never had sash weights. The were held open by a stick or a puch button Windows with a sash came with the Victorians in Northern New England. After we got into the 1800's the Capes were trimmed with Greek Revival trim around the windows, doors a corners. Things like fluted corner boards and dental molding can be seen on Capes from this period. Such trim shows not only when the home was built but how wealthy the builder was. This is also when the story and a half building would often be built with four dog-house dormers, two on both sides and ofcourse semetrical with respect to a center line. Also in keeping with a subject on which you are so well informed, now the finer Capes would include well crafted moldings. These would be modest compared to what the Victorian era brought and often would only be found in the Parlor usually on the left side of the main building. The keeping room on the other side might reveal the beams outlining the room but these were part of the structure supporting the house and not trim as such. I have owned and totally rebuilt 3 of these buildings and I share your love of learning from these craftsman long gone but who revealed so much by what they left for us. Some were extremely skilled and had amazing wood to build with. Others less so, who had to comprimise with materials. Each leaves a different challege for those of us seeking to preserve and keep functional these windows on our past.
Brent Hull is one the most competent and gifted interpreters of architecture in the US. His observations on home styles and advice on changing them to be more appealing are unmatched. I wish he was in Colorado!

While Brent has helped us to create an off-the-shelf collection accessible to all, his custom work, detail, and more importantly, his historic millwork knowledge is second to none.
Hull Historical handled the renovation of our 4400 square foot previously abandoned 1904 historic home. They turned a vandalized mix of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s into a historically accurate and beautiful home and office. Highly, highly recommend!
Submitted a project request through their website after calling them and didn't receive anything back after two weeks. Went in person to their location to get an update and was told that if I didn't receive a reply then they probably weren't interested in doing the work. Completely unprofessional and I will not be recommending them to my clients in the future when the jobs are too large for my business to handle.
