New management sucks
Great place
Very poor customer service. No one answers there phones.
The initial process and installation were excellent. Very poor service since. Panels were installed in June of this year. By August, we were still not converted. Partly due to KC P&L. Once new meter was installed, I called SunSmart as our solar box was still showing red lights. I was told someone would come out and fix a converter on our panels and would fix the drywall in my basement that was cut through during installation. It's now the end of August and I've not heard from anyone.
These guys are the best! I've done three self-installer projects with SunSmart and they were awesome the whole way through. From working with my designs suggestions to helping me understand the technology, I would never use another solar company, EVER!!
Update: It is now 2025 and while my enthusiasm for solar energy is as strong as ever, my opinion of Sun Smart has gone way down. Over the last 2-3 years I have had little or no luck getting hold of anybody there. I have become a customer of Shinnavo Co. and we will see how they do on an upcoming service call in a couple weeks. So far communication has been a) possible and b) pretty good. I will update then. - - - - It is just now one year since my panels were installed. A very good job, workers easy to deal with, very accommodating and happy to explain things. We even had a change of design after things started and they were happy to make the changes. Now, similarly to what another person said, KCPL was TERRIBLE about reviewing and inspecting things so we could get turned on to the grid. That didn't actually happen until the end of February (!!!) and even then I needed two micro-inverters replaced in March as they were apparently defective (?). Sun Smart did this very expeditiously and I have had no issues since. Have been VERY pleased with the performance and the savings! Only $13/mo so far and that is the customer charge you can't get away from. I highly recommend.
UPDATE July 2024 This company has vanished, phones not answered and storefront gone. They were great while they lasted. My system suddenly stopped working and I need to find someone new. We've had a roof panel system from SunSmart for several years and love it. Their easy to use web app shows moment by moment what's happening and shows me right now, for instance, that over the past year we have used $1063 of electric service but have generated about 10% more than that. Living in a small town with its own small electric company, the town is not required to pay us back the excess so I leave a small electric heater running in the basement to warm the house a bit and save on our gas bill as well. The financing for the system was great, really low rate and done in such a way that we had no problem refinancing our mortgage when we chose to. The installers were quick and tidy and helpful in getting us up and running. My wife used to hesitate to be comfortable on hot summer days so it's great to be able to assure her that the AC doesn't cost a cent any more.
Won't answer phone or respond to emails. Matter of fact I think my wife said the email server kicked it back as undeliverable. Purchased 2 systems from them about 9 years ago a 31 panel array and a 16 panel array. Recently had 2 panels fail(arc/shorted out). Called to see about servicing them under warranty(should be atleast 10 years from manufacturer). No response from Sunsmartusa. Warranty is only good if the business is still reputable or in business. Buyer beware.
I loved my solar panels when they were first installed. until i found out about service fees. it was $350 for a gut to come out and replace a fuse. the second time we replaced the fuse ourselves. When the problem was identified is was a part under warranty. They charged another $350 service fee and the guy who serviced it said 3 of our panels were cracked and needed to be replaced. no one ever contacted us about what to do. I reached out to them and was never answered back. called again today and they said they will call back. So now we wait and see. They called back and came out to replace the broke panels after I posted this review with no cost to me.
Had solar panels installed in 2015. In June of this year, they stopped working. We called Sun Smart and they said, "We no longer have a service department. You will have to call another company to come out and service them." Called back again today, and they said, "We'll get your information to the service department." WHAT? We'll see if they contact us. Update: I have called 10 times. No response. The owner FINALLY emailed me but no promises.
