I really enjoyed my time at GCU. I am taking online classes and it is easy to navigate. My experience with my academic and financial advisor is awesome. I would really recommend anyone to attend GCU.
Do not go to this school, they will lie to you on multiple occasions their prices but then will automatically charge you for more than what they originally stated. This school is a joke and a scam. I never get any help from my student advisor, I have even had a "professor" give me a low grade because I "didn't send as many messages in the chat as the other group member" and been scammed for the past year and a half. Whenever I try to call for any solution their automated system redirects you to their website which is honestly unprofessional, unhelpful and callous. For a Christian school that claims to treat everyone with love, empathy and compassion I have received none of these things from one person at this school. Not to mention that while attending school is already THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of dollars you also have to PAY to just graduate. You have to pay $150 for an application to graduate, then if they accept your application you also have to pay to walk! Awesome, thanks for nothing GCU if I could go back in time and attend a different school I would.
As a current doctoral student, I want to share my honest experience with Grand Canyon University. The school promotes itself as a Christian institution that supports students through a 3-year doctoral journey. Unfortunately, my experience has not aligned with these claims. Recently, GCU mandated that students switch to a new dissertation template, even if they were already far along in the process. This caused unnecessary delays and forced students to spend extensive time reformatting their work—time that could have been spent advancing their research. These delays often translate to additional tuition costs, which many feel is financially motivated. Though GCU markets itself as a Christian university, the faith-based presence seems limited to weekly motivational scriptures. The values of fairness, transparency, and student care that one might expect from a Christian institution have not been consistently evident in my experience. I’m now pursuing legal counsel due to the academic and financial setbacks this process has caused. If you're considering a doctoral program here, I strongly recommend researching thoroughly and going in prepared with outside support.
Very friendly greeting guards. Directions given were eady to follow. The campus was clean and beautiful.
Diploma Mill … get a piece of paper, but not an education to go with it. Enroll and you can get a "full" load of credit (15 hours or so) and spend fewer than six hours in the classroom each week. What accreditation agency signs off on this?!? Built to win recruits, but not to deliver a respectable academic regimen. Sound good to eat at a food court every day for every meal -- and think cafeterias are LAME? This is the place for you. You'll be begging for some vegetables and non-fast-food after just a week. Definitely focused on athletics, not academics. Worst campus "bookstore" ever. Mostly new buildings. Online is the tail wagging the dog. Good people choose this place, but they enter the work world with education disadvantages, though they do get that coveted parchment, and maybe that's enough for most. Rec center is old, crowded and the whole thing smells like a locker room. A zillion degrees outside large parts of the academic year. Seems to be lacking distinguished certifications in various departments like business -- for good reason. No charm to campus … a bunch of huge boxes crammed together with little to no landscaping in between. Major metropolitan setting detracts from the vibrancy of campus life. Theology requirements are close to non-existent, so it is a borderline religiously affiliated school in that important aspect. If you care about the academic reputation of your alma mater, this isn't the place for you. If you don't, maybe save money and just do local community college or online instead.
They need a whole new team for the nursing department Field Experience Counselors! None of them are reaching out to students months ahead of time to let them know all the requirements and paper work that is needed to finish this last course in order to receive your BSN. The counselors do not respond in a professional timely manner. It is difficult to get a hold of them when needed. My class has been push out twice now and possibly a third time. I have multiple emails I sent and go days without response or update. It took me sending an email out the my academic counselor about wanting to filing a formal complaint against the Field Experience Counselors for them to start updating me. Also, commencement date is a bit weird as most schools graduate May to June and they do it in April?! I couldn't attend because I am "technically" not finished with all my courses and they were trying to get me to do commencement saying I'm graduating. Therefore, no point to doing commencement. GCU has been decent until the last course.
If you are looking for a Christian based, Jesus loving University then don’t go here! The Christian based message is only a front. This school is dishonest, only out for the money, not hearts for Jesus. Look at the attrition rates. A few small details: pretty much ALL fast food on campus. One “small” area where students can have food that is somewhat “home cooked” and not even open all days. Students are not allowed to have toasters or anything in the dorms except a microwave so they are forced to eat unhealthy fast food. And it gets old, real fast. There are other room options that allow for toasters, they have kitchens, etc..but those get taken fast. A Psychology class incorporates the gender agenda, equality narrative. Does not speak to man and woman being created in the image of God. Again, if this was a true Bible-based Christian school…like Liberty University, would never be a normal part of the curriculum. Anatomy lab- taught by a graduate student, not even a certified professor. 3 hours of lecture in a lab and 0 hands on experience. What am I paying for?? Think twice before attending. I wish I had done better research before getting sucked into this money pit by the high school recruiter who said all the right things.
Marisa Ronstadt-Mendoza I pray no one gets this lady. I had explain to her on October 10th that my grandfather was passing. By October 12th. He was gone. I had explained to her on the 10th that I would call her as soon as I could and that I had an issue with the price of GCU. So she sent over a price list spreadsheet. While calling me throughout the entire week until October 20th, even when I had told her I would call her back. Due to this woman's ignorance and negligence I won't be attending GCU. So if you get that lady I pray you make it past her because I didn't. All she had to say was that I must be going through some things and projecting yeah, I'm projecting that I'm angry about you calling me when I said I would call you back. You've continued to call me while my grandfather was dying!!!!! While disregarding that I had stated that previously on October 10th. I also called in and have yet to hear from a manager. Seems like they are all about their profits and none about their students.
I've been a student at GCU for over a year now, and have had repetitive issues. The disorganization is top tier, I've seen many students struggle as a result. The staff turnover is insane, I've had 3 student counselors in one year. The campus dean at my site gets off on causing stress and anxiety, she discriminates against students who are not the same color as her or are in marginalized groups, and genuinely enjoys causing and seeing failure. She announces to everyone when specific students are struggling and actually tries to get people to repeat classes. Nearly everyone on campus has had to repeat classes and I don't know if that is for monetary gain or just because their instruction is just that bad. The class and sim instructors are actually great, and personally apologize for Dr. Lindsay's behavior and their lack of ability to help. Most of them have complained that they don't appreciate her approach and even though they want to help their hands are tied. When I encountered a specific issue and asked for help, I've been told the board in Arizona determines everything and I just have to wait for them to contact me, which has been weeks and still nothing. I could've never anticipated how awful and unprofessional this college is, especially with how expensive it is. Unfortunately, since the majority of nursing credits won't transfer to anywhere else I feel stuck to finish my degree with GCU. I would run for the hills if you are considering the ABSN program at GCU. I would gladly pay an extra 20k to a different program to avoid the unnecessary stress this school puts on its students who are just doing the best they can to succeed. The fact that I have to post this under a friend's email because I fear retaliation is actually crazy.
If you’re thinking about attending Grand Canyon University, let me save you the hell I went through. While I was transitioning out of the Army, I followed every step to withdraw from classes on time. I reached out to my advisor, Bedillia Gonzales, multiple times. She ignored me. GCU then claimed I owed them money for those same classes. That “debt” became the excuse to mess with my Pell Grant and make transferring schools as difficult as possible. As a 100% permanently disabled veteran, I explained my situation clearly, more than once. I was met with silence, incompetence, and roadblocks. Here’s where it gets real shady: I recently reached out to Bedillia again to try and resolve things. Almost immediately afterward, I started receiving a wave of financial statements: more aggressive and more frequent than ever before. It’s crystal clear this was retaliation for speaking up. GCU hides behind “Christian values” while treating students: especially veterans AND non Christians, like liabilities. Their advisor team is incompetent, their communication is nonexistent unless it’s about money, and their idea of accountability is financial harassment. If you’re a veteran, or you value your sanity, do not attend this school. You’ll regret it. UPDATE: MORE RETALIATION: Today, I received a letter that I was in collections! I’m totally fine with this because that means GCU will leave me alone. However, the timing?! Please, keep in mind that this comes right after me, leaving this review; as well as contacting Bedillia and her Supervisor again. It’s obviously not a coincidence. This university is disgusting…
