Great ambiance - stopped in after the RV show on Friday afternoon around 315 pm for a late lunch early dinner. Seated ourselves at the bar. We moved to the opposite side to avoid the draft from the frigid air that was plaguing KC for the weekend. We ordered drinks off the happy hour menu well whiskey and sprites, the half fried chicken meal with mashed potatoes and the green beans. Service was friendly, food was good- the surprise came when we got our bill. Initially presented with a bar bill that was 36.00 plus8.00 cocktail fee! Their happy hour menu stated well drinks were 5.00 each. We had two a piece - when we questioned our bartender he said mumbled something about adding a mixer was the reason for the 8.00 fee. I said again “today is Friday your menu states happy hour drinks are 5.00” He pulled his happy hour menu to double check me after claiming earlier he was the manager. He then took our receipt and said he would address it - we received our new bill and on it refund stated - something along the lines of : customer appeasement! That is an interesting way of communicating your error - sir! I would encourage everyone to go and try the food at least once and enjoy the venues eclectic style that makes you feel like you were at a southern grandmas house- I would also highly encourage you to carefully review your bill. We could have been petty and not tipped based on our perception of a poor attitude -when we questioned our bill or escalate it to a real manager. Instead , I chose to tip the 20% based on the actual service initially given prior to his attitude and comments on our receipt. However, he need not worry we won’t be back ! we took a day off work to have a wonderful date day and try someplace new to us . I’m sure the next time we chose to do this we will find many more opportunities in downtown KCMO to enjoy elsewhere.

I went here twice while I was in Kansas City. The food and service are unmatched. I absolutely love collard greens and they know how to cook them. The salad i had was amazing. The fried chicken and waffles was beautiful. The alligator bites were decent. It's not something I will order again. The service was even better than the food. Will visit again if I have a chance.

Our other restaurant reservations didn’t work out so we tried our luck here. Lula’s was close so we checked with them and they were able to get us in after a brief wait. The service was good and the food for the most part was good. My husband got the fried chicken. It was decent however the Mac & cheese was extra salty. I had the shrimp & grits which I thought were pretty good.

Food was alright but given the cost it could be much better! This spot shows us why there is a difference between southern cooking and soul food. The greens had stems all in em and there is no reason a Salisbury steak should be 32 dollars thats a meal designed to feed a family I dont think we needed it to be gentrified. Overall im still giving a 4 because it wasn't bad just very underwhelming.

The food was good, although I had never had shrimp and grits with a hard fried egg in to with BBQ sauce. I asked them to HOLD the BBQ sauce and they did. The grits were buttery and delicious. However the service was crap. Waiters and waitresses passed us sitting at our table with a hand up, trying to make sure contact with them, saying hello excise me... no one stopped! I just wanted a refill on my coke... nothing. Then the chef nicely brought out my friend's take-home dinner. She asked for a to-go box for her current dinner that she didn't finish... that's when he left us know that he was the chef... NOT a waiter. We apologized and tried to flash down a waiter/waitress AGAIN. FINALLY a waiter came with our check. There were 3 of us dining together... he brought 1 CHECK. He NEVER came back to our table to even ask... Will this be one check or separate checks. So we told him that it would be separate chucks and if we could have a to-go cup for our soft drinks. He said yes. He came back with the to-go cups and the separate checks. That's when we saw the GRATUITY was automatically added to our individual checks!!! Is THAT why NO ONE ever came back to our table to even ask... It's everything alright with your meal? Is there anything else I could get you? This was my 1st visit to Lula's and I don't recommend it... NOR will I come back. The service here STINKS & the staff gets tips for being negligent. Please try another SOUL FOOD restaurant...shrimp, grits & BBQ sauce indeed.

Food and drinks were really good. We had the fried green tomatoes, peel and eat shrimp, fried chicken and blackened catfish. Food came out fast and hot. The staff is friendly, Hailey our server was great. Upscale southern cuisine.

Good food and friendly service for first-timers! My husband and I shared the alligator bites, which were very good. I ordered the smothered pork chops and he had the Salisbury steak. Both were delicious with large portions. Dessert was also enjoyable with the chocolate cake and strawberry pie. We had a great server who knew what meals to steer us towards. The restaurant is a bit noisy so keep that in mind. Due to an unexpected three dollar credit card fee added after payment we will not return. Charging customers for card use felt very tacky to us especially with so many other good restaurants that do not pass this cost on to guests.

Lula Southern Cookhouse... Let's start on a good note. The atmosphere is amazing and our server Chad was good. We arrived around 5 pm without a reservation and were sat immediately, no wait. They do have a parking lot on the side so you don't have to pay for parking. That's where the good stops. The chicken came out super quick, quicker than I believe it should have if you were frying it fresh. It also lacked any flavor, was really dry like it was cooked twice. The hot sauce was also very bland. The Mac and cheese was watered down, very liquidy, also no flavor. The mashed potatoes, although real potatoes, lacked any flavor. The biscuits with the egg wash on top were crumbly and the whipped butter was slightly sweetened but not in a good way to me. The gravy was thick and clumpy. Not smooth like a gravy should be. Chad said they are a southern kitchen so they don't care about calories, but obviously they don't care about flavor either. When I say everything lacked flavor I also mean it lacked salt. They do charge a fee if you use a credit card. But there was no auto-grat added to our check. This place is fairly overpriced for what they are offering. You definitely are paying for location over everything else. DO NOT waste your time here. Not worth the trouble.

Have never had southern food, so decided to order the Award Winning Gumbo and Fried chicken. Btw, thats $40 worth of fried chicken, which is extremely salty. Please do not order takeout from this place. And I don’t think southern food is this bad.

My family and I had dinner here and we all loved it. I don't have a negative complaint. The food was amazing! The service was great and the atmosphere is fun. They also serve their own special blend of roasterie coffee and tea. TBH it may be the best sweet tea I've ever had. I had the southern fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, with collard greens. Everything was cooked perfectly with tons of flavor. Another plus is the amazing view of the city from our table. We will definitely be back.
