Lula Southern Cookhouse

I took a trip to Kansas and visited LuLu restaurant! The hostesses where very helpful trying to seat walk-in and find seating ! We where offered bar seating and we took it and the bartender didn't have a very inviting attitude! The bartender with the facial hair just didn't make me feel at home as if he doesn't have time to take time to explain certain of the items on the menu and how he's looking. You make you feel like you really don't want to order nothing regardless. Anyway afterwards food came out my daughter enjoyed her meal but I didn't. I'm very adamant about tipping for great service, but if I don't get great service I don't tip and the food is very expensive and it's not worth the prices that they offer. Look them up on Lulu in Kansas City downtown.

Second visit to Lula's. Love the quaint and quiet atmosphere, service and food. Cajun pasta, blackened catfish, calabash basket, banana pudding, lemon bars ... all fantastic! Cajun dish was large enough for 3 meals. Easy free parking next to the building which is hard to find downtown.

So I get here thinking after a funeral; a simple drink and comfort food. Not necessarily. Service was slow something was going on with the liquor license so the drink was a no go! I simply order the devil eggs quick and blueberry biscuits to go. Pizza Shuttle for dinner. The service was slow and horrible. The guy behind the center back area kept his hands under his apron never once sanitized and couldn’t stay off his phone. I was sat right near the kitchen; DISGUSTING IDEA!! The seating needs to be removed right there. The server didn’t listen. I sat before my deviled eggs approximately 10 minutes before another guy said is “How are you deviled eggs?” I would t know I’m still waiting on my plastic ware and Coke. I received it. Overall what I had a mind for a comforting experience was not.

We’ve loved Lula’s for a long time, but today’s visit was disappointing. The service has noticeably declined, and it affected the overall quality and enjoyment of the meal. What once felt like a warm, family‑oriented Southern cookhouse now feels more focused on cutting corners, and as a multicultural family, we did not leave feeling welcomed or valued. When I asked about juice for my 2‑year‑old, I was told the only option was orange juice. I later discovered a $5 charge for it, even though the kids’ menu clearly states that a drink is included. What is a child expected to drink—soda? And why wasn’t the extra charge disclosed? Additionally, several of my questions were answered in a condescending tone, including when I asked about the biscuit that was supposed to come with my meal. Instead of acknowledging the oversight, the server acted as though I had requested it to be removed. Overall, the experience left us feeling unwelcome, and sadly, not eager to return.

I typically don't post renewed so quickly, but I am literally STILL SITTING AT THE TABLE...!!! First off, the atmosphere is certainly Southern, warm, cozy with 'Grandma's House' written all over the place! The staff (Matt and Amelia) were simply wonderful. Matt was super attentive and pleasant. Now, the food.... BABY, LET ME TELL YOU... RUN, DONT WALK TO THIS PLACE!! Me and my husband both had the chicken and waffles. The chicken was well seasoned and the waffle was crispy and light! They serve it with a chili syrup that is AMAZING! I had a side of Mac and cheese...WHICH HAS BEEN THE BEST MAC AND CHEESE I have ever had at a restaurant!! My husband had the cheese grits and he WAS IN GRIT HEAVEN!!! The prices are reasonable, especially for the quality of food you are being served! This place is OFFICIALLY on my 'must go to' restaurants for KC!!

Great atmosphere and our server was great as well. This place can be a bit more tidy, the high chair that I was given was beyond filthy, so I decided to let my baby sit in my lap instead. The food wasn’t that great at all, especially for the price. The fried chicken had no flavor, the gumbo gave more of a gravy like consistency and taste, and the Cajun pasta was extremely salty. The more enjoyable food items on the menu were the shrimp, alligator bites, roast and a few desserts.

I was really looking forward to celebrating Mother’s Day at Lula’s Southern KC, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a very disappointing experience. We had a reservation for a late lunch for a group of 7 adults and 2 infants, specifically noting that we would need high chairs. When we arrived, we were told there were no high chairs available, which immediately made things more difficult for our group. To make matters worse, we were informed after being seated that they were unable to serve alcohol due to a licensing issue. On a holiday like Mother’s Day, that’s something that should have been clearly communicated ahead of time. The service itself was slow, with a long wait for our food despite having a reservation. When the meals finally arrived, they were cold and, honestly, very underwhelming in terms of flavor. For a restaurant that specializes in Southern cuisine, we expected much more. Overall, the lack of preparation, poor communication, and disappointing food made what should have been a special occasion feel frustrating instead. I would not recommend this restaurant based on our experience.

The good: the atmosphere was nice. The bad: unfortunately, the food was subpar. I ordered the gumbo, and it honestly tasted like it could have come out of a can. The shrimp in it was very unappetizing and had such a strange texture that I thought I was eating a piece of chicken. The pasta was also way overcooked, and no one at our table finished their meal. We also had to ask for kids’ menus, which seems like something that should be offered automatically when children are seated. We wanted to order drinks as well, but were told they were not serving drinks at that time. Overall, the atmosphere was the best part of the experience, but the food and service were disappointing enough that we would not come back.

My husband, our friend, and I went here for lunch yesterday. We didn't know what to expect, since the other restaurants nearby were packed to watch the world cup and this one wasn't. We found out it wasn't as busy because they're waiting on their liquor license renewal. I get it... people want to enjoy some drinks when they watch the games. However, they're definitely missing out of they don't eat here. My husband got the biscuits and gravy, our friend had the Cajun pasta, and I had the peach cobbler salad. The salad was one of the best I've ever had. It was incredible with the peaches and pecans and that dressing. I usually order my dressing on the side, since I don't like too much, but I don't think they could've put too much on that salad. It was that good. The Cajun pasta was also really good, but the highlight of the whole meal was definitely the biscuits and gravy. These were hands down the best any of us have ever had and we've definitely had our fair share over the years. Because they were so good, we came back to Lola's this morning at 10am when they opened specifically for the biscuits and gravy. We didn't think it was possible, but they were even better this morning. I don't know what kinds of witchcraft they do, but those biscuits are some kind of magic. They are slightly crunchy on the outside and caky tender on the inside. Usually, the gravy is what makes the biscuits and gravy so good, but it's the opposite in this case. If you haven't tried these, I would highly recommend doing so. We also had the country breakfast this morning and that bacon was just phenomenal. Not many places can actually make extra crispy bacon when I request it, but they did this to perfection. We're visiting KC from Illinois and leaving on Monday, but you'd better believe we'll be back to Lola's every day we're here. I'm so glad we happened upon this place, since it's going to be a regular stop every time we return to KC. Well done, Lula, well done.

Visited Lula… stated with some water and sweet tea. Which is interesting because I asked for tea at another restaurant and they didn’t have sweet tea; so I guess that isn’t standard in Kansas, Mo. I then ordered the Arnold Palmer wings. I think I was expecting something a little more sweet and tangy but they were standard wings. Not bad, but just crispy and standard. It came with a thick sweet dip, almost like syrup. I liked the chicken without the dip. I then had the grilled blackened catfish. Honestly it wasn’t my favorite. It came with rice and collard greens. I did like the collard greens. The fish and rice tasted a bit gritty. I think you can get the fish fried. Having it fried probably would’ve been better. The service was nice my waiter’s name was Kingdom! And another young lady was super nice, Danielle she was pretty awesome ! Love the restaurant vibes and music
