We're New Yorkers who make an annual (minimum) trek to Philly for sightseeing, shopping, and foodie stuff. Usually on a Friday or a Saturday in December. We discovered Monk's about 12 years ago and try to include it in every visit. This year, we visited on a Thursday around noon, and stopped in for a few beers and some mussels and frites and sat at the bar. I can't say enough about how wonderful a place this is. Exceptionally friendly staff (especially Bea, our terrific bartender) and warm, funny local patrons make for an experience that stays with us long after we've driven back home, looking forward to next year, when we'll visit again.
Randomly found Monks and grabbed a seat at the bar. Cas was our bartender and he was awesome. We had a few beers from their phenomenal selection and a couple of food items... What a great experience.
Came in for a beer. I was given a beer that the glass was nearly 1/2 head. Bartender didn't even flinch. I hadn't seen that much head on a beer since attending keggers in College.
Monks is still running as one of the best beer bars not just in Philadelphia but some argue one of the top 10 beer bars in the world...they certainly have been doing craft beer before it ever became trendy. There is no shortage of excellent beer at monks, ever. When just in with some friends from out of town they had Russian River Consecration and Supplication and Pliny the Elder on tap. It takes longer to pick out the beer you want The only thing I wish is that they’d keep the beer list up to date, I hate asking the bartender for 8 different beers just for them to tell me they are not available! I get that it’s a lot of beers but it’s not that difficult in this day and age to keep a what’s on deck list!
Never been to Monk's, but I understand it is a staple of Philly. Food was great - we had several salads, mussels, and their cheese plate while we enjoyed a few tasty beer selections. Everything we had was fresh, flavorful and truly delicious. They also have an extensive number of beer options, as well as non-beer beverages, too (I'm pretty sure - but we really focused on their beers). The service was excellent - our server/bartender took very good care of us, and helped us with recommendations of beers to try based upon hearing those that we enjoy. Would highly recommend to anyone who really enjoys craft beers - they have a lot of options to try. Ask for their Beer Bible for some light reading.
De la senne stouterik was delicious. Duck salad sandwich slightly less so, leaning stingy on the fillings. Accompanying fries were limp. Walnut tart to close was just ok. Confused, as this place seems to have a reputation for good food - will report back when I've tried the mussels.
Used to live in Philly and was happy to come back during a conference. Still super good and the serving on the mussels are very generous for the price. Burgers and drinks galore
This has been a bucket list spot for me for a long time, and I'm glad I finally made it! The beer selection was so good it was a bit overwhelming, and the food was phenomenal. My party got the Ghent mussels, chicken sandwich, and duck salad sandwich. Everything was unreal and very affordable for how good it was.
We have been here twice in the past two weeks...and they did not disappoint! The decor is very relaxing and peaceful...and the food is out of this world! The first visit I played it safe and got the chicken fingers, and my friend got a burger and fries. Everything was delish but we FELL IN LOVE with the fries!!! Last week I had the Mussels with the mushroom and horseradish sauce broth (it was a special) OMG...soooo good, AND they came with those magical fries!!! While they are known for their beers, we were on work time so we didn’t get to try any but we plan on going back so we will give an update when we can about the booze. 😊
We stayed in the area and randomly found this during a late night search for dinner options. Lots of places close by 8/9pm so we were pleasantly surprised to find Monk's which closes after 11pm. Good beer selection, great service. We enjoyed the mussels, fries, and steak frites salad.
