I stopped by Belle Epicurean Bakery one day after visiting Washington Park and had a butter croissant. The croissant was pretty subpar, soft and lack texture, I was disappointed. Some other pastries look good though, and they have a quite nice provisions section.
Pricey but worth it imo. Their French butter shortbread cookie (pictured—SO soft!) and kouign amann (also pictured) are out of this world!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE JOE! She was so sweet and made me the best drink ever! Was having a bad morning and special ordered something sweet and they went the extra mile. Best breve caramel macchiato I've ever had! Will be coming back and asking for joe ❤️
When I lived in Seattle, I would pop in every so often for a nice latte and the macaroons for a sweet treat. Seasonal flavors too. The pain au chocolat was perfect. They have so many delectable treats from small cakes, cookies, and everything yummy. On my last visit, I picked up their ham and cheese baguette sandwich. 👌🏼 Parking can be tricky when it’s busy, but I’ve always had luck on the side or back.
The food was in little plastic containers, was gross, and the staff were really unfriendly Food was extremely expensive for the things given
Used to be lovely. I haven’t been here in perhaps 2-3 years. I was sad to see so few options for croissant and pastries, as well their breakfast sandwich is $10, and seems fairly lean on elements in the sandwich. It seems quite overpriced. Ultimately I just got coffee on this visit. The barista was friendly. The cashier was seemingly distracted. Pricing was listed on about half of what little product was on display. There was no soap in the restroom.
Great variety here, with many items that I've only seen at this bakery in the city. Each item had good flavor, but a few things in excess. Almost like comfort food I suppose. This is good for an occasion when you really want something fatty and sweet. The twice baked croissant could have used less grease, the ratatouille sandwich needed more veggies and less cheese and eggs, the quiche had a raw bottom, but the filling was light and airy. The triangle raspberry cake was good, but really heavy on the cream.
Pay attention to the older negative reviews and note that even 2-3 years later nothing has changed. They charge $16 for a literal brioche bread, single piece of thinly sliced meat and a smattering of cheese. Clearly they are coasting on neighbors who are just used to coming by and don’t want to change their routine, the proximity to the park and fake marble countertops because it’s a “vibe”. No self respecting gourmand should visit this place until they either lower the prices or present freshly made food with obvious intent in tasting of value
I tried the turkey & goat cheese 'sandwich' (not in picture) on a brioche bun and while it tasted good, it was very small and not really a lunch menu sandwich. They didn't have it in the display case when I placed my order, otherwise might have chosen something else going by the size. Also tried one of the pastries which had a cookie base with a dark chocolate & grand Marnier ganache. It was rich, but the ganache was quite hard. The financiers were nice and the portions a lot bigger than the other pastries on display. We got seating immediately and the ambiance was nice. The food is on the pricier side and the portions small.
While clean and architecturally pleasing, we are only giving 3 stars to Belle Epicurean. It was an ok place for morning coffee and treats, but we were hoping for something better. The greeting and service were ok but nothing special. Bakery cases were mostly empty, though the items in them were fine but not spectacular. The shelves with items for sale in the main customer area were partly empty and not thoughtfully stocked with display items for sale.
